Fox, CNN, WPost – varying fortunes ahead

Fox News Channel has now beaten every other network in cable for 23 months straight, based on total day ratings; with CNN’s viewership down 25 percent in primetime and 20 percent down in day time compared 2017.

Fox launched 7 October 1996 6pm New York which puts Jupiter in Capricorn in the 10th square a 7th house Libra Sun; with a flamboyant Moon Mars in Leo in the entertaining 5th. Solar Arc Neptune will oppose its Mars, except in 6 months’ time, which may take the shine off; with a discouraging tr Saturn conjunct the Jupiter till late year and then square the Sun in 2019. Though tr Saturn through the 10th can be consolidating. Where it looks fairly devastated is by 2020 when tr Pluto will conjunct the Neptune.

CNN, 1 June 1980 5pm New York, is labouring through sticky times with tr Pluto square Pluto and trine Saturn till late 2019; with a blocked Solar Arc Sun square Pluto in fifteen months’ time; and a catastrophic Solar Arc Mars conjunct Pluto by 2021. So its decline doesn’t look like being reversed.  The CNN Saturn does square his Gemini Sun and Sagittarius Moon, so no surprises they point out his flaws and he retaliates with ‘fake news.’

The other ‘fake news’ target is The Washington Post, which has been relentlessly anti-Trump, causing him to attack the owner, Amazon Jeff Bezos.  It launched on 6 December 1877 and is a Sun, Mercury in Sagittarius in a serious square to Saturn in Pisces. The WP Mars in Pisces squares Trump’s Sun and Moon and the WP Pluto is exactly on Trump’s midheaven – so a mighty and angry battle for control.

This year has Solar Arc conjunct Neptune which isn’t great for a business; with tr Neptune square the Sun till late year, ditto. But there will be a moment of jubilation and relief as their Solar Arc Jupiter squares Uranus at some point this year.  Tr Pluto will trine the WP Pluto in 2020/2021 will see them exerting their influence.

MSNBC has been putting on viewers and now stands just below Fox in ratings. Launched 15 July 1996 at 7.15am New York, it has a 12th house New Moon Mercury in Cancer and a Fire/Water Grand Trine of Saturn in Aries trine Pluto trine Mercury; with Mercury opposition Neptune Uranus. The Cancer fits the American chart and spirit, the Saturn Pluto gives endurance; Uranus Neptune fits new technology.

They’re on a lucky roll this year with Solar Arc Jupiter conjunct Uranus; and their New Moon just across the Ascendant into their 1st house for more visibility. September/October this year look muddled with plans not working out; 2019/2020 will ramp up the pressure on them with tr Pluto opposing the Sun as well as Moon; and an enthusiasm-dampening tr Saturn conjunct Jupiter just before this December; but they’ve also got more luck and success from tr Pluto conjunct Jupiter/Uranus in 2019/2020. 2020/2021 looks muddled with some chaos, maybe scandals getting in the way.

  1. Fox News facing hard time is probably Rupert retiring, BTW. I’m certain his heirs are much less likely to keep on milking the cow their father was. I do, BTW, think Murdoch actually loathes Trump, and I do not think I’m using strong wording here. My reasoning?

Murdoch had a longstanding feud with Silvio Berlusconi in the 1980’s and 1990’s, even before he entered politics, because he wanted to break into very lucrative Italian TV Market and Silvio obviously wouldn’t have it. Murdoch only got his big break with Italian TV Network being digitalized. The interesting thing is that Italian Sky News was very Liberal, and very pro-EU. So, if Rupert Murdoch was ready to have his hardest fought victory look like this, he really does not care about ideology all that much. He is totally in it to “show them all” and doesn’t like competition. Trump wanted to launch an own tv channel at one point. Certainly not an endearing move with Rupert.

  2. I have to check this out, but I think CNN’s ratings fall is also partly caused by CNBC gaining ground with more Liberal viewership. CNN has been too middle of the road, leftish voters still remember them making ratings on Iraqi War they loathed. But, I think Rachel Maddow of CNBC has beaten Sean Hannity of Fox News a couple of times on primetime. So, while Fox News rules unchallenged on pro-Trump media landscape, anti-Trump camp is much more divided.

And, I think that what’s maybe the most interesting development of the Trump Era is how traditional, longform printed investigative journalism is having a surge. Ronan Farrow got his (well deserved) Pulizer for his work on Weinstein to “New Yorker”. I also read “The Atlantic” is doing incredibly well. This became apparent with Saturn passing to Capricorn, and I suspect the trend will grow with Uranus now in Taurus, too. People will want to hear explanations, not just conclusions fitting in 240 characters. Of course, there’s a chance they’ll arrive to wrong conclusions (hello, 1939!). But, it’s a change of speed.

  3. I read somewhere (AdWeek I think) that the average viewer age for all of them is 60 something, with CNN the youngest. CNN will probably need to focus on digital and international.
